How the attack works simplified
- 1Attacker logs inNeeds valid credentials to the router
- 2Crafted HTTP requestRequest sent to the Mcli functionality
- 3Buffer overflowStack memory overwritten by oversized input
- 4Code runs on routerAttacker gains arbitrary code execution
- ResultAttacker controls the router
What happened
A stack-based buffer overflow in the Mcli functionality of the TOTOLINK X2000R router lets a crafted HTTP request trigger arbitrary code execution after authentication.
Why it is dangerous: An attacker who gains control of the router can intercept or redirect traffic and reach devices on the home or office network. Anyone running this router firmware is at risk.
Are you affected?
You are affected if you run TOTOLINK X2000R with firmware version TOTOLINK-X2000R-Gh-V1.0.0-B20250421.1327.
TOTOLINK X2000R, firmware TOTOLINK-X2000R-Gh-V1.0.0-B20250421.1327
What to do
- Check the router's firmware version in its admin interface and confirm whether it matches the affected version.
- Check the vendor's website or support channel for a newer firmware release that fixes this issue, and install it when available.
- Restrict access to the router's web admin interface to trusted devices and disable remote management from the internet.
- Use a strong, unique admin password to reduce the chance an attacker can log in in the first place.
