Joomla Gridbox extension: unauthenticated database injection via sort parameter

A website plugin for Joomla lets anyone on the internet send a crafted link that can make the site's database run commands the site owner never intended. An attacker could read or change stored site data.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1AttackerAnyone on the internet, no login needed
  2. 2Crafted linkMalicious value in the sort-by parameter
  3. 3Gridbox pluginValue inserted into database query unchecked
  4. 4DatabaseQuery runs with the attacker's injected logic
  5. ResultAttacker reads or alters site data

What happened

Gridbox (balbooa.com) for Joomla fails to validate the sort-by URL parameter on store product list pages; the unchecked value is inserted directly into an SQL ORDER BY clause, enabling unauthenticated SQL injection.

Why it is dangerous: No login is needed, so any visitor can attempt the attack; successful exploitation can expose customer, order, or account data stored in the site database and may let attackers modify it.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run the Gridbox extension for Joomla below version 2.20.4.2 and use store product list pages.

Gridbox extension for Joomla (balbooa.com), all versions before 2.20.4.2

What to do

  1. Update the Gridbox extension to version 2.20.4.2 or later
  2. If you cannot update right away, disable the Gridbox extension or its store product list pages
  3. Review database and web server logs for suspicious sort-by parameter values
