Juniper Session Smart Conductor: remote commands as root via crafted minion ID

Attackers who can send a specially crafted device name to this network controller can make it run their own commands with full administrator rights. That could let them take over the whole system.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Remote attackerSends crafted salt minion ID
  2. 2Provisioner inputAutomatedProvisioner accepts the ID
  3. 3Unsanitized commandID passed to OS command unescaped
  4. 4Root shellCommand runs with root privileges
  5. ResultAttacker controls the Conductor as root

What happened

An OS command injection flaw (CWE-78) in the AutomatedProvisioner component of Juniper Networks Session Smart Conductor lets a remote attacker run arbitrary commands as root by supplying a crafted salt minion ID.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation gives the attacker root control of the Conductor, which manages network devices, so the wider network is at risk. Any organization running the affected software that exposes this provisioning function is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Juniper Networks Session Smart Conductor with the AutomatedProvisioner component in use.

What to do

  1. Check Juniper's security advisory for GHSA-4q6m-6p89-9rmf / CVE-2026-103406 and identify the fixed version for your release line
  2. Update Session Smart Conductor to the fixed version as soon as it is available
  3. Restrict network access to the AutomatedProvisioner and salt interfaces to trusted management hosts until patched
