Dell PowerProtect Data Domain: unauthenticated remote code execution flaw

An attacker on the network could send specially crafted data to the backup appliance and take control of it, without needing a password. Backup systems are a prime target because they hold copies of important data.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Remote attackerNo login credentials required
  2. 2Crafted network inputOversized data sent to a vulnerable service
  3. 3Buffer overflowStack memory overwritten by the input
  4. 4Command executionAttacker runs commands on the device
  5. ResultAttacker controls the backup appliance

What happened

A stack-based buffer overflow in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain systems lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker potentially execute commands on the device.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation could give an attacker command execution on the backup appliance, putting stored backup data and recovery capability at risk. Organisations relying on these appliances for backup and recovery are at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Dell PowerProtect Data Domain in the affected feature or LTS release ranges and it is reachable over the network.

Feature Release 7.7.1.0 through 8.8; LTS2024 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.80; LTS2025 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.40; LTS2026 8.6.1.0 through 8.6.1.20

What to do

  1. Check your Data Domain OS version against the affected ranges listed in the Dell advisory
  2. Apply the fixed release from Dell's official advisory as soon as it is available for your branch
  3. Restrict network access to the Data Domain management and service interfaces to trusted hosts only
  4. Monitor the appliance for unexpected processes, configuration changes, or unusual network connections
