How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker sends inputCrafted request to Langflow over the network
  2. 2Input reaches OS commandSpecial characters are not neutralized
  3. 3Command runs on hostRuns with the privileges of the Langflow process
  4. ResultAttacker runs arbitrary code on the server

What happened

An OS command injection flaw (improper neutralization of special elements passed to an operating system command) affects IBM Langflow OSS versions 1.0.0 through 1.12.3, allowing remote arbitrary code execution.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker who can reach the Langflow service over the network may be able to take over the host, reading or changing data and using it as a foothold into other systems.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run IBM Langflow OSS version 1.0.0 through 1.12.3, especially if it is reachable from the internet or untrusted networks.

IBM Langflow OSS 1.0.0 through 1.12.3

What to do

  1. Check whether you run IBM Langflow OSS between 1.0.0 and 1.12.3.
  2. Check the GitHub advisory GHSA-8rq9-23x9-43h7 and IBM vendor notices for the fixed version and update as soon as one is available.
  3. Restrict network access to Langflow so it is not exposed to the internet or untrusted networks.
