Jupiter X Core WordPress plugin lets attackers log in as the site admin

Attackers who have no password can log in to a WordPress site as its administrator through the plugin's X (Twitter) login feature. That can give them full control of the website.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker visits loginStarts X social login without an account
  2. 2Plugin uses owner tokenStored app token is not replaced by visitor token
  3. 3X returns owner profileAPI reports the app owner, not the visitor
  4. 4Login matched by emailOwner's email matches the WordPress admin
  5. ResultAttacker is logged in as administrator

What happened

The Jupiter X Core plugin's Twitter/X social login handler (verify_twitter_callback) never replaces the site owner's stored API token with the visitor's token. The X API then returns the site owner's profile, and the plugin logs in the WordPress account whose email matches it, enabling authentication bypass.

Why it is dangerous: An unauthenticated attacker can become an administrator, so they could change content, install malicious code, or steal data. Sites where the X app owner's email matches the administrator account are at highest risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run the Jupiter X Core WordPress plugin version 4.61.0 or earlier with its Twitter/X social login feature configured.

Jupiter X Core WordPress plugin, all versions up to and including 4.61.0

What to do

  1. Check whether Jupiter X Core is installed and its version is 4.61.0 or earlier
  2. Disable the Twitter/X social login feature in the plugin settings until a fix is available
  3. Update Jupiter X Core as soon as a fixed version is released, and check the vendor's site for it
  4. Review administrator accounts for unexpected logins or changes
