zip Rust library: crafted ZIP file can crash apps using legacy-zip

A tiny specially crafted ZIP file can make an app built with the Rust zip library crash while extracting it. A crash can stop a file-processing service until it is restarted.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker crafts ZIPTiny file with fake 64-bit size
  2. 2App receives fileUploaded or read from outside
  3. 3extract() is calledLegacy Shrink decoder runs
  4. 4Memory reserve failsCapacity overflow panic before validation
  5. 5Process terminatesUnhandled panic stops the service
  6. ResultService crashes, denial of service

What happened

In the zip crate for Rust, the legacy Shrink decoder reserves output memory using an attacker-controlled 64-bit uncompressed size before validating the compressed data, causing a capacity overflow panic. The Reduce and Implode decoders have the same pattern.

Why it is dangerous: A remote attacker who can supply a ZIP file (for example by uploading it) can terminate the process, causing denial of service for services that extract untrusted archives.

Are you affected?

You are affected if your application uses the zip crate from 5.1.0 up to (not including) 9.0.0 with the legacy-zip Cargo feature enabled and calls ZipArchive::extract() on untrusted ZIP files.

Package / productAffected versionsFixed in
zip · rust>= 5.1.0, < 9.0.09.0.0

What to do

  1. Update the zip crate to 9.0.0 or later in Cargo.toml and rebuild.
  2. If you cannot update yet, remove the legacy-zip feature if you do not need legacy compression methods.
  3. Run cargo update -p zip and confirm the lockfile shows version 9.0.0 or later.
