How the attack works simplified

  1. 1AttackerSends crafted request without logging in
  2. 2rembg APIPasses sam_model value into file paths and URLs
  3. 3Server filesMalicious ONNX models placed beside target file
  4. 4Data leakFile bytes encoded into returned PNG mask
  5. ResultAttacker reads server files

What happened

rembg before 2.0.82 passes an attacker-controlled sam_model value from the public /api/remove endpoint into file paths and GitHub download URLs, enabling path traversal, unverified model downloads, and ONNX external-data file reads encoded into PNG output.

Why it is dangerous: Anyone who can reach the rembg API can read any file the rembg process can access, and run arbitrary ONNX computation on the server. Servers running it as root expose even more.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run rembg 2.0.81 or earlier with the SAM model options exposed through a publicly reachable /api/remove endpoint.

What to do

  1. Update rembg to version 2.0.82 or later (pip install -U rembg>=2.0.82)
  2. If you cannot update now, block public access to /api/remove or disable the extras.sam_model option
  3. Check logs for repeated /api/remove requests containing sam_model values with '../' or '#'
  4. Run the service with minimal filesystem permissions and not as root
