Seroval: crafted input can hang a service and make it unavailable
A small specially crafted message sent to an app using this library can make the app stop responding. The app can freeze or run out of memory.

How the attack works simplified
- 1Attacker sends payloadSingle unauthenticated request to the service
- 2App deserializes inputCalls fromJSON or fromCrossJSON on it
- 3Decoder loops foreverUnchecked array length or done index
- 4Event loop blockedThread stalls while the decoder runs
- ResultService becomes unavailable
What happened
Seroval versions up to 1.6.7 do not check two fields in deserialized data: an array's element list and a sequence node's done index. Crafted values cause endless loops in the decoder or in an iterator that never finishes.
Why it is dangerous: An unauthenticated attacker can send one request to a service that deserializes untrusted input and make it unavailable, blocking the event loop or exhausting memory.
Are you affected?
You are affected if you use the npm package seroval 1.6.7 or earlier and pass untrusted input to fromJSON or fromCrossJSON.
| Package / product | Affected versions | Fixed in |
|---|---|---|
| seroval · npm | <= 1.6.7 | 1.6.8 |
What to do
- Update seroval to 1.6.8 or later
- Check that your application passes untrusted input to fromJSON or fromCrossJSON; if it does, prioritize this update
- Restart services after updating so the fixed code is loaded
