Seroval JavaScript library can be crashed by a tiny malicious request

A small crafted request can make a server run out of memory or freeze. No login is needed, so anyone on the internet can trigger it.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker sends requestSmall crafted payload, no login needed
  2. 2App decodes inputCalls fromJSON or fromCrossJSON
  3. 3Length is trustedArray length not checked as real array
  4. 4Memory or loop explodesAllocation and iterations set by attacker
  5. ResultServer crashes or stops responding

What happened

In seroval, the functions fromJSON and fromCrossJSON do not verify that an array node's element list is actually an array, so an attacker-supplied length controls memory allocation and loop count independently of payload size. This is a residual bypass of the earlier fix for GHSA-66fc-rw6m-c2q6.

Why it is dangerous: An unauthenticated attacker can end the process or block its thread for seconds or indefinitely, making the service unavailable. Any application decoding untrusted request bodies with these functions is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use npm package seroval version 1.4.1 through 1.6.7 and pass untrusted input to fromJSON or fromCrossJSON.

What to do

  1. Update seroval to version 1.6.8 or later
  2. Check your dependency tree (for example with npm ls seroval) to find any indirect copies and update them too
  3. Redeploy the affected application and confirm the new version is running
