How the attack works simplified
- 1Attacker submits contentCrafted data-mce-object element in input
- 2Media plugin processes itElement is created before sanitization
- 3Script executesRuns during processing in the editor
- 4Victim views the pageStored content triggers the script for them
- ResultAttacker runs scripts in victims' browsers
What happened
Stored cross-site scripting in TinyMCE's media plugin: elements crafted via the data-mce-object attribute are created and can execute scripts before sanitization runs.
Why it is dangerous: An attacker who can submit content to a site using this editor can run scripts in the browsers of users who view it, potentially stealing sessions or acting as those users.
Are you affected?
You are affected if you use TinyMCE 8.5.1 up to (not including) 8.9.3, or TinyMCE 7.9.3 (fixed in 7.9.4), with the media plugin enabled.
