REDAXO CMS: attackers can forge login tokens and get admin access

A flaw in the REDAXO website system lets an outsider trick it into accepting a fake login token. That can give them administrator control of the website, including the ability to run their own code on the server.

  6. ResultAttacker controls the website server

What happened

REDAXO core versions from 5.3.0 before 5.21.4 contain an authentication bypass in the structure/history plugin. An unauthenticated attacker can force the session-tied secret into a predictable state and forge temporary login tokens for accounts such as admin.

Why it is dangerous: A successful attacker gets backend access and code execution outside live mode, which can lead to full website takeover and data theft. Any site running an affected version with the structure/history plugin exposure is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if your site runs REDAXO core from 5.3.0 before 5.21.4 with the structure/history plugin.

REDAXO core from 5.3.0 before 5.21.4

What to do

  1. Update REDAXO core to 5.21.4 or later
  2. Review admin accounts and backend logins for unexpected activity
  3. Change passwords for backend accounts after updating
