Highcharts Grid: attacker-supplied icon can run scripts on page

If an attacker can change the settings of a Highcharts Grid table, they can make an icon run hidden code when a user hovers over or clicks it. That code runs with the same access as the web page.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker edits configControls Grid settings via untrusted data
  2. 2Custom icon injectedEvent-handler attributes added to icon path
  3. 3User hovers or clicksReplaced sort or pagination icon triggered
  4. 4Script runs in pageExecutes in the hosting page origin
  5. ResultAttacker runs script in user's page

What happened

Highcharts Grid (grid-lite and grid-pro) from 2.3.0 through 3.1.0 copies every key of a custom icon definition under rendering.icons onto an SVG path element without filtering attribute names, so event-handler attributes can be injected.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation runs script in the hosting page's origin, enabling session theft or actions as the user. Custom icons override built-in sort and pagination icons, so the injected handler can appear without any extra configuration.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use @highcharts/grid-lite or @highcharts/grid-pro versions 2.3.0 through 3.1.0 and any part of the Grid configuration comes from untrusted or user-controlled data.

Package / productAffected versionsFixed in
@highcharts/grid-lite · npm>= 2.3.0, <= 3.1.03.2.0
@highcharts/grid-pro · npm>= 2.3.0, <= 3.1.03.2.0

What to do

  1. Update @highcharts/grid-lite and @highcharts/grid-pro to 3.2.0 or later
  2. If you cannot update yet, add the sanitizing workaround from the GitHub advisory so icon definitions are filtered before loading
  3. Review whether any Grid configuration is built from untrusted input and stop that input from reaching the Grid
