Highcharts charts can run attacker scripts through breadcrumb buttons

If someone can control the settings of a chart on your website, they can make a clickable breadcrumb button run their own code in your visitors' browsers. This happens only after a user drills down into the chart and interacts with that but

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker supplies configMalicious data reaches chart settings
  2. 2Chart renders breadcrumbsStyle values applied as SVG attributes
  3. 3User drills downBreadcrumb buttons appear on screen
  4. 4User hovers or clicksInjected event handler fires
  5. 5Script runs on the pageCode executes in site's origin
  6. ResultAttacker script runs in the site's origin

What happened

Highcharts JS applies breadcrumbs.style values as SVG attributes without filtering attribute names, so event-handler keys such as onmouseover can be set on the breadcrumb button and execute in the hosting page's origin.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation runs script in the page origin, giving access to that site's session data and actions for the user. Websites that build chart configurations from untrusted or user-supplied data are at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use Highcharts (Core, Stock, Maps or Gantt) versions 10.0.0 to before 11.4.9, 12.0.0 to before 12.6.1, or 13.0.0 to 13.0.2, with non-styled (classic) mode charts that use drilldown or breadcrumbs and let untrusted data reach the chart configuration.

What to do

  1. Update highcharts to 11.4.9, 12.6.1 or 13.1.0 (for example, npm install highcharts@13.1.0)
  2. If you cannot update right away, load the published workaround script immediately after Highcharts and before any chart is created
  3. Make sure chart configurations never include untrusted user input
