Highcharts Dashboards: edit-mode labels can run attacker scripts in the page

If someone can put malicious text into the dashboard's language settings, a web page could run their hidden code when an editor opens the sidebar. This can let an attacker act as the logged-in user on that site.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker supplies textMalicious markup enters language config
  2. 2Config storedDashboards uses it as language strings
  3. 3User opens sidebarEdit mode renders labels as HTML
  4. 4Script executesEvent handler runs in page origin
  5. ResultAttacker runs code in the site

What happened

Highcharts Dashboards edit-mode sidebar renders component language strings as HTML instead of plain text, allowing injected event-handler markup to execute in the hosting page origin (XSS).

Why it is dangerous: Anyone able to control the Dashboards language configuration can run scripts in the hosting site when a user opens edit mode, potentially stealing sessions or data from that site's users.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use the npm package @highcharts/dashboards version 1.0.0 through 4.2.2 with edit mode enabled and untrusted data can reach the language configuration.

What to do

  1. Update @highcharts/dashboards to 4.2.3 or later (e.g. npm install @highcharts/dashboards@4.2.3)
  2. If you cannot upgrade yet, apply the EditMode init workaround from the advisory at application startup
  3. If you do not need Edit Mode, set editMode.enabled to false
