Highcharts Dashboards: Malicious text in edit-mode fullscreen label can run scripts

A chart dashboard tool could run hidden code in a web page if someone feeds it a crafted language setting. That code would act with the same access as the website itself.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker sets languageInjects markup with event handlers into options
  2. 2Edit mode renders labelFullscreen label parsed as HTML
  3. 3Script executesHandler runs in the hosting page origin
  4. 4Session and data exposedSame access as the hosting application
  5. ResultAttacker runs script in the page origin

What happened

Highcharts Dashboards parses the edit-mode fullscreen button label as HTML instead of plain text, so markup with event handlers can execute in the hosting page's origin when the control is rendered.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation gives script the same access to page data, storage and session state as the hosting application, which can expose user sessions and data.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use @highcharts/dashboards from 1.0.0 before 4.2.3 with Edit Mode enabled and viewFullscreen in editMode.contextMenu.items, and untrusted data can reach the Dashboards language configuration.

What to do

  1. Update @highcharts/dashboards to 4.2.3 or later (for CDN, use the 4.2.3 versioned URL)
  2. If you cannot upgrade yet, apply the setButtonText workaround that uses textContent instead of innerHTML at application startup
  3. Alternatively, disable Edit Mode (editMode.enabled: false) or remove viewFullscreen from the context menu items
