What happened

A use-after-free bug (memory is reused after being freed) in Chrome's Animation component lets a crafted HTML page execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox.

Why it is dangerous: Anyone who opens a malicious or compromised web page in an unpatched browser can be targeted, and the attacker gets code execution inside the browser process.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.73 on desktop or ChromeOS, or a Chromium-based Microsoft Edge that has not yet picked up the Chromium fix.

Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.73 (desktop); ChromeOS / ChromeOS Flex Chrome browser prior to 156.0.8078.77; Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) builds that include the affected Chromium code (versions not stated).

What to do

  1. Update Google Chrome to 156.0.8078.73 or later, or ChromeOS Browser to 156.0.8078.77 or later
  2. Restart the browser after updating so the fix takes effect
  3. Update Microsoft Edge to a build that includes the Chromium fix
