minimatch glob matching can use excessive CPU and memory from crafted patterns
A specially crafted glob pattern (a file-matching pattern) can make the minimatch library use huge amounts of CPU and memory while it prepares the pattern, which can slow down or crash the app using it.

How the attack works simplified
- 1Crafted patternAttacker supplies a short malicious glob
- 2Pattern compiledApp passes it to minimatch
- 3Expansion loopEntries grow via '**/..' expansion
- 4Pairwise comparisonQuadratic checks consume CPU and memory
- ResultService slows down or crashes
What happened
In minimatch before 11.0.1, firstPhasePreProcess() expands attacker-controlled '**/..' segments in a fixpoint loop when optimizationLevel is 2 or higher, growing globParts, which secondPhasePreProcess() then compares pairwise, causing excessive CPU and memory use.
Are you affected?
You are affected if your application uses minimatch below 11.0.1 and passes untrusted or user-supplied glob patterns to it with optimizationLevel 2 or higher.
| Package / product | Affected versions | Fixed in |
|---|---|---|
| minimatch · npm | < 11.0.1 | 11.0.1 |
What to do
- Update minimatch to 11.0.1 or later
- Check your dependency tree (for example with npm ls minimatch) for older copies pulled in by other packages
- Avoid passing untrusted glob patterns to minimatch until the update is applied
