HighVulnerabilityCVE-2026-118988updated 30 Oct 2026, 16:00 UTC

CallBackery (Perl) lets anyone read server files via /doc route

Anyone on the internet can ask the CallBackery web app to show the documentation of files on the server, and the app does not check whether the request is allowed. Because of a path trick ("..::"), this can reach files well outside the app

Fix available?YesVersion 0.60.1 or later (the later advisory references fixes in 0.62.0, which also resolves related issues) · since 30 Oct 2026

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker sends requestCrafted name with "..::" sequences
  2. 2Request reaches app/doc route runs before any login check
  3. 3Path is built uncheckedPod::Simple::Search joins "::" parts into a path
  4. 4File is readFiles outside the app folder can be opened
  5. 5POD content returnedWhole file shown if it has POD without =cut
  6. ResultAttacker reads arbitrary server files

What happened

CallBackery before 0.60.1 passes the /doc route's name parameter to Pod::Simple::Search->find without validation, which splits on "::" and allows path traversal, so unauthenticated clients can read the POD of any file the server process can read.

Why it is dangerous: Files the server can read, such as configuration or system files, can be disclosed to unauthenticated attackers, and a file with a POD directive and no =cut is returned in full.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run CallBackery for Perl older than 0.60.1 with its documentation plugin reachable at /doc.

What to do

  1. Upgrade CallBackery to version 0.62.0 or later (at minimum 0.60.1)
  2. Block or restrict access to the /doc route until the upgrade is done
  3. Review server logs for requests to /doc containing "::" sequences
