LMDeploy: unauthenticated remote code execution via /update_weights endpoint

Anyone who can reach the LMDeploy server over the network can send it specially crafted data and make it run commands on the machine. No login is needed to do this.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Remote attackerNo credentials needed
  2. 2Reaches APISends request to /update_weights
  3. 3Pickle loadedBase64 data deserialized without checks
  4. 4Command runsExecutes as api_server process
  5. ResultAttacker controls the server

What happened

LMDeploy versions 0.9.0 through 0.18.0 deserialize pickled data sent to the /update_weights endpoint without validation, via ForkingPickler.loads on base64-encoded input in serialized_named_tensors. This allows unauthenticated OS command execution as the api_server process.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker who reaches the API can take full control of the server process, which can expose model data, credentials, and the rest of the host. Any organization exposing an LMDeploy API to a network is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run LMDeploy versions 0.9.0 through 0.18.0 with the api_server exposing the /update_weights endpoint reachable from untrusted networks.

InternLM LMDeploy 0.9.0 through 0.18.0

What to do

  1. Restrict network access to the LMDeploy api_server so untrusted clients cannot reach /update_weights
  2. Check the GitHub advisory GHSA-fq46-3gxq-v4vc for a fixed version and upgrade once available
  3. Review api_server logs and host for signs of unexpected command execution
