TOTOLINK X2000R router: attacker can run code via crafted web request

A logged-in user of this router's web admin page can send a specially crafted request that overflows a memory buffer, letting an attacker take control of the device. Routers like this sit at the edge of your home or office network, so contr

How the attack works simplified

  2. 2Crafted HTTP requestSent to the router's web admin interface
  3. 3Buffer overflowOversized macstr value overwrites the stack

What happened

A stack-based buffer overflow in the boa web server's formMapDelDevice handler, processing the macstr parameter, on TOTOLINK X2000R firmware TOTOLINK-X2000R-Gh-V1.0.0-B20250421.1327 allows arbitrary code execution through an authenticated HTTP request.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation gives an attacker code execution on the router, which can expose or redirect traffic on the network. Anyone running this X2000R firmware build is at risk, especially if admin access is exposed to untrusted users.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run TOTOLINK X2000R with firmware TOTOLINK-X2000R-Gh-V1.0.0-B20250421.1327 and its web management interface is reachable by users who could authenticate.

What to do

  1. Check whether your router runs firmware TOTOLINK-X2000R-Gh-V1.0.0-B20250421.1327 and look for a vendor update
  2. Install any fixed firmware from TOTOLINK as soon as it is available
  3. Restrict access to the router's web admin page to trusted devices only and change default admin passwords
  4. Disable remote management from the internet until the device is patched
