How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker logs inNeeds valid admin access to the router
  2. 2Crafted HTTP requestSent to the IPv6 setup page
  3. 3Buffer overflowdhcp_dns1 input overruns stack memory
  4. 4Code runs on routerAttacker executes their own commands
  5. ResultAttacker controls the router

What happened

A stack-based buffer overflow in the boa formIpv6Setup handler, in the dhcp_dns1 parameter, of the TOTOLINK X2000R router firmware allows arbitrary code execution when an authenticated HTTP request is crafted to trigger it.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker who gets into the router's admin interface can run their own code on it, which can expose all traffic passing through the network and any devices on it.
