HoneySQL (Clojure) can let attackers inject SQL commands into database queries

Some apps that build database queries with this Clojure library can be tricked by crafted user input into running extra database commands. Attackers could read, change or delete data, depending on what the database account is allowed to do.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker sends inputCrafted text submitted through the app
  2. 2App passes input to keywordInput is not validated before use
  3. 3Unchecked SQL is generatedSuspicious-character check is skipped
  4. 4Database runs the queryDriver executes the statement unchanged
  5. ResultAttacker runs commands on the database

What happened

HoneySQL builds SQL from Clojure data. From 2.0.0 through 2.7.1392, some formatters skip the suspicious-character check when user input passed to keyword or symbol becomes an SQL identifier, enabling SQL injection.

Why it is dangerous: Successful injection can expose or alter database contents, and the damage scales with the database account's privileges. Any application that passes untrusted data into HoneySQL keyword or symbol calls is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you use HoneySQL 2.0.0 through 2.7.1392 and pass user input or other arbitrary data into the DSL via keyword or symbol calls.

HoneySQL 2.0.0 through 2.7.1392 (Clojure).

What to do

  1. Upgrade HoneySQL to version 2.7.1392 or later
  2. Until upgraded, validate input before passing it to keyword or symbol
  3. Run the application's database account with the least privileges it needs
