SOCFortress CoPilot: stored script injection can steal login tokens

A user can hide a malicious script inside an alert comment. When a security analyst or admin opens that alert, the script runs in their browser and can steal their login tokens, letting an attacker act as them.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Customer userSubmits a comment with hidden script
  2. 2Portal stores commentComment saved without sanitizing HTML
  3. 3Analyst opens alertComment rendered as live HTML
  4. 4Tokens stolenScript reads tokens from browser storage
  5. 5Attacker impersonates analystUses tokens to act as privileged user
  6. ResultAttacker takes over privileged account

What happened

SOCFortress CoPilot renders user-supplied comment, case, asset and health-check fields via v-html without sanitization (stored XSS), and stores access and refresh tokens in JavaScript-readable storage instead of HttpOnly cookies.

Why it is dangerous: An injected script can take over privileged analyst or administrator accounts, access other tenants' data, modify or delete incidents, and disable detection and response.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run SOCFortress CoPilot snapshots before the 0.1.70 (health-check) and 0.1.76 (comment and other SOC fields) fixes, and portal users can submit comments or case data.

SOCFortress CoPilot snapshots preceding 0.1.70 and 0.1.76 (customer-portal).

What to do

  1. Update SOCFortress CoPilot to version 0.1.76 or later
  2. Until patched, restrict who can post alert comments and case notes
  3. Ask analysts and admins to sign out and back in after updating, to invalidate any stolen sessions
