Apache Fineract: attackers can run database commands through sorting options

Some ways of listing records in Apache Fineract let an outside user slip database commands into the sort settings. That can let them read or change data they should not see.

What happened

Apache Fineract up to and including 1.15.0 concatenates caller-supplied orderBy, sortOrder and order parameters into SQL in the Center read endpoint and the datatable entry read endpoints, causing SQL injection.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker who can reach these endpoints may be able to read, modify or delete financial and customer records stored in the database. Organisations running Fineract for microfinance or lending data are most at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Apache Fineract 1.15.0 or earlier and expose the GET /api/v1/centers or GET /api/v1/datatables endpoints to users or networks you do not fully trust.

Apache Fineract through 1.15.0

What to do

  1. Check whether your Apache Fineract version is 1.15.0 or earlier
  2. Restrict access to the Center and datatables endpoints to trusted users or networks where possible
  3. Watch the Apache Fineract project and GitHub advisory GHSA-7pvg-2h32-c6jc for a fixed release and update as soon as one is published
