AOS-10 interface flaw lets nearby attackers run system commands

An attacker on the same local network can send crafted input to a device's management interface and make it run commands on the device's operating system. No login is needed, so anyone nearby who can reach it could try.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Nearby attackerOn the same local network segment
  2. 2Crafted requestSent to the device's management interface
  3. 3Input not sanitizedCommand injection flaw in the interface
  4. 4Commands executedRun with privileged OS rights
  5. ResultAttacker controls the underlying operating system

What happened

Command injection vulnerabilities exist in the affected interface of AOS-10, allowing an unauthenticated adjacent attacker to inject commands that execute with privileged operating system rights.

Why it is dangerous: A successful attack gives the attacker control of the underlying system with privileged rights, which could lead to full takeover of the device and access to the network it serves.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run AOS-10 with the vulnerable management interface reachable from a network segment an attacker can access.

AOS-10 (specific versions not stated in the available material)

What to do

  1. Check the vendor advisory for the AOS-10 version that fixes this issue and update to it
  2. Restrict access to the AOS-10 management interface to trusted administrators only
  3. Monitor devices for unexpected commands or configuration changes until patched
