How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Anonymous attackerNo login or credentials needed
  2. 2Reaches platformSends unauthenticated request to DataStage
  3. 3Writes to shared RedisWrites under another tenant's key
  4. 4Cached parameters poisonedFlow settings and credentials are altered
  5. ResultTenant credential protection is broken

What happened

IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data 5.4.0.0 has an unauthenticated arbitrary write into shared Redis, under any tenant's key, which breaks the credential-encryption boundary.

Why it is dangerous: An anonymous attacker can poison any tenant's cached flow parameters and undermine credential protection, affecting every tenant sharing the Redis instance.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data version 5.4.0.0.

What to do

  1. Check whether your IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data is version 5.4.0.0.
  2. Restrict network access to the platform and its shared Redis service until a fix is confirmed.
  3. Watch the IBM security bulletin and the GitHub advisory GHSA-94v7-vrp8-c6rw for a patched version, then update.
