What happened

A stack-based buffer overflow exists in HiRDB Server, a database product, across several versions of the 9 and 10 series. Input larger than the reserved stack space can overwrite adjacent memory.

Why it is dangerous: A successful attack could let someone take control of the database server, exposing or altering all stored data. Any organization running an affected HiRDB version that is reachable by untrusted parties is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run HiRDB Server Version 10 before 10-12-01, HiRDB Server Version 9 from 09-00 through 09-66-22, HiRDB with Additional Function Version 9 from 09-00 through 09-66/V, HiRDB Server Version 9(32) from 09-02 through 09-66-22, or HiRDB with Additional Function Version 9(32) from 09-00 through 09-66-/V.

HiRDB Server 10: 10-00 to before 10-12-01; HiRDB Server 9: 09-00 to 09-66-22; HiRDB with Additional Function 9: 09-00 to 09-66/V; HiRDB Server 9(32): 09-02 to 09-66-22; HiRDB with Additional Function 9(32): 09-00 to 09-66-/V

What to do

  1. Update HiRDB Server Version 10 to 10-12-01 or later
  2. Check the vendor's advisory for patches for Version 9 and the Additional Function editions, which are not listed as fixed in the material
  3. Restrict network access to the HiRDB server to trusted hosts only until patched
