HiRDB database server has a memory overflow flaw that can allow takeover

A flaw in the HiRDB database server lets data sent to it overflow a fixed-size memory area. An attacker could use this to crash the server or possibly run their own code on it.

What happened

A stack-based buffer overflow exists in HiRDB Server versions 9 and 10 and in the HiRDB Server with Additional Function variants, where input is written past the bounds of a stack buffer.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation could let an attacker crash the database or gain control of the server that stores the data. Organizations running affected HiRDB servers that accept network connections are at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run HiRDB Server 10 before 10-12-01, HiRDB Server 9 from 09-00 through 09-66-22, HiRDB Server with Additional Function 9 from 09-00 through 09-66/V, HiRDB Server 9(32) from 09-02 through 09-66-22, or HiRDB Server with Additional Function 9(32) from 09-00 through 09-66-/V.

HiRDB Server 10: from 10-00 before 10-12-01; HiRDB Server 9: 09-00 through 09-66-22; HiRDB Server with Additional Function 9: 09-00 through 09-66/V; HiRDB Server 9(32): 09-02 through 09-66-22; HiRDB Server with Additional Function 9(32): 09-00 through 09-66-/V

What to do

  1. Identify every HiRDB Server instance and its exact version, including any 'with Additional Function' variants
  2. Upgrade HiRDB Server 10 installations to 10-12-01 or later
  3. For version 9 and 9(32) installations, check the vendor advisory for a fix or mitigation, and restrict network access to the server in the meantime
  4. Confirm that database ports are not reachable from untrusted networks
