What happened

Improper authentication in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain lets an unauthenticated remote attacker execute arbitrary commands with root privileges.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker could take complete control of the backup appliance, potentially affecting or destroying stored backup data. Any organization running an affected release with remote access exposed is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Dell PowerProtect Data Domain Feature Release 7.7.1.0 through 8.8, or LTS2024 7.13.1.0-7.13.1.80, LTS2025 8.3.1.0-8.3.1.40, or LTS2026 8.6.1.0-8.6.1.20, and it is reachable remotely.

What to do

  1. Check whether your Data Domain version falls within an affected range listed above
  2. Upgrade to a fixed release as soon as possible, using Dell's official guidance
  3. Restrict remote access to the management interface until the upgrade is complete
  4. Review logs for unexpected logins or commands on the system
