Oracle WebLogic Server: unauthenticated remote attack can read and change data

Someone on the internet who does not need a password could reach Oracle WebLogic Server over the web and read or change data it holds. Anyone running an affected version should treat this as urgent.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Remote attackerNo login or password needed
  2. 2Crafted HTTP requestSent over the network to the server
  3. 3WebLogic Server flawCore component mishandles the request
  4. 4Data accessedRead, changed, or deleted without authorization
  5. ResultAttacker gains broad access to server data

What happened

A flaw in the Core component of Oracle WebLogic Server lets an unauthenticated attacker with network access over HTTP compromise the server, with high confidentiality and integrity impact (CVSS 9.1).

Why it is dangerous: An attacker can create, modify, or delete critical data and gain access to all data the server can reach, without any login. Any internet-exposed WebLogic server on an affected version is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Oracle WebLogic Server 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, or 15.1.1.0.0, especially if it accepts HTTP traffic from networks an attacker can reach.

Oracle WebLogic Server (Oracle Fusion Middleware, Core component): 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0

What to do

  1. Identify all WebLogic Server instances running the affected versions listed above
  2. Apply the latest Oracle Critical Patch Update or security patch for WebLogic Server from Oracle's official advisory
  3. Restrict network access to WebLogic HTTP ports so that only trusted networks can reach them until patched
  4. Review logs for unusual HTTP requests to WebLogic and check for unauthorized data changes
