AdminNeo SQLite driver lets logged-in users write and run PHP web shells

A logged-in user of AdminNeo's SQLite mode can write a file containing PHP code into the website folder, then run commands on the server through a web address. This can take over the server.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Authenticated userLogs in with SQLite driver
  2. 2ATTACH blockedOnly ATTACH is filtered
  3. 3VACUUM INTO runsWrites DB file to any path
  4. 4PHP shell in web rootEmbedded PHP code is executed
  5. ResultAttacker runs commands on the server

What happened

AdminNeo blocks the SQL ATTACH command for SQLite but not VACUUM INTO, which writes a full database file to any path with any extension, allowing an authenticated user to plant a PHP web shell in the web root.

Why it is dangerous: A user with SQLite login access can execute arbitrary commands on the server, potentially as root, which exposes all data and the host itself. Sites running AdminNeo with SQLite access enabled are at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run AdminNeo versions before 5.5.1 with the SQLite driver enabled and users can log in to it.

What to do

  1. Update adminneo-org/adminneo to version 5.5.1 or later
  2. Until updated, disable or restrict the SQLite driver and limit who can log in to AdminNeo
  3. Check the web root for unexpected PHP files, especially recently created ones
