AdminNeo lets attackers inject cookie settings, exposing login sessions

Someone who can add a special header to requests can trick your browser into sending your AdminNeo login session and database key to a different website. That can let them take over your admin session and read saved database passwords.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Attacker adds headerSends crafted X-Forwarded-Prefix header
  2. 2AdminNeo builds cookieHeader text is not sanitized
  3. 3Browser accepts cookieInjected Domain attribute widens scope
  4. 4Session cookies sent outneo_sid and neo_key reach attacker domain
  5. ResultAttacker gets session and database key

What happened

AdminNeo copies the client-supplied X-Forwarded-Prefix header into REQUEST_URI without sanitizing semicolons, so injected text ends up as extra attributes (Domain, Path, Secure, SameSite) in Set-Cookie headers for the neo_sid and neo_key cookies.

Why it is dangerous: An attacker can widen cookie scope to their own domain, capturing the session ID and the key used to decrypt stored database passwords. Anyone running AdminNeo behind a proxy that forwards this header, or exposed to network interception, is at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run AdminNeo 4.6.0 through 5.5.0 (or any version before 5.5.1) and the app can receive an X-Forwarded-Prefix header from clients, a proxy, or an upstream path.

What to do

  1. Update adminneo-org/adminneo to version 5.5.1 or later with Composer
  2. If you cannot update now, stop your reverse proxy from forwarding or accepting the X-Forwarded-Prefix header
  3. Sign out of AdminNeo sessions and review database access after updating
