AdminNeo lets logged-in SQLite users delete arbitrary server files

A logged-in user of AdminNeo's SQLite mode can make the server delete almost any file it has permission to remove, not just database files. This can break the site or wipe important data.

How the attack works simplified

  1. 1Logged-in userHas valid session and CSRF token
  2. 2Drop requestSubmits arbitrary path in db[] field
  3. 3unlink() callNo extension check on drop path
  4. 4File deletedAny PHP-writable file is removed
  5. ResultArbitrary server files get deleted

What happened

The database-list drop action passes user-submitted paths directly to unlink() in SQLite mode, skipping the file-extension check used when creating or renaming databases.

Why it is dangerous: An authenticated user can delete any file the PHP process can write, which can take the application offline or destroy data, and a hostile insider or stolen account could cause this.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run AdminNeo before 5.5.1 with the SQLite driver enabled and users can log in to it.

What to do

  1. Update composer/adminneo-org/adminneo to 5.5.1 or later
  2. If you cannot update now, disable the SQLite driver or restrict who can log in to AdminNeo
  3. Check that the PHP process cannot write to files it does not need, such as application code and config
