Google Cloud GKE containerd: several flaws allow code execution

Attackers who already have a login to your Google Cloud Kubernetes (GKE) setup could run their own commands, bypass protections, or crash services. Patch the cluster to close these gaps.

What happened

Multiple vulnerabilities in Google Cloud Platform's GKE containerd component allow a remote, authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security controls, tamper with data, disclose confidential information, or cause denial of service.

Why it is dangerous: Successful exploitation could let an attacker take control of workloads or data in affected clusters and disrupt services; organisations running GKE with containerd are at risk.

Are you affected?

You are affected if you run Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) clusters using the containerd runtime on the affected GKE versions.

Google Cloud Platform GKE containerd (specific versions not stated in the material)

What to do

  1. Check the GKE security bulletins from Google Cloud for the affected versions and your cluster's version
  2. Upgrade GKE node pools to a patched version as listed in Google's advisory
  3. Restrict who can authenticate to your clusters until patches are applied
